Melanoma kills an estimated 8,790 people in the U.S. annually. If recognized and treated early, it is significantly more curable. When neglected, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes more difficult to treat and can be fatal. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, melanoma causes the most deaths.

  • Identify and discuss early detection, staging, and the role of sentinel node biopsy for melanoma
  • Describe the role of immunotherapy for melanoma
  • Discuss the rationale and current or emerging combination approaches to targeted
    therapies in melanoma
  • Recognize atypical Spitz tumor in relation to metastasis and malignancy
