Physician Bios The physicians at The Regional Cancer Center represent primarily two medical specialties. They are either medical oncologists/hematologists or radiation oncologists. The medical oncologists treat patients who have specific types of cancer or blood disorders known to respond to chemotherapy, hormones or other medicines. These physicians work within specific treatment protocols which allow for maximum treatment of the cancer with minimal side effects to the patients. The radiation oncologists care for patients whose particular type of cancer requires radiation therapy. The physicians plan and oversee the daily radiation treatments, reviewing x-rays taken on the treatment machines to verify the exact area the radiation beam is treating. They monitor the patient's side effects and progress throughout treatment and meet with each patient regularly. In recent years, more and more types of cancer have responded to a program of combined radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Patients being treated with combined therapy will see physicians in both specialties. The Regional Cancer Center was designed to accommodate combined therapy, offering both types of treatment within one treatment facility.
