Renovations at RCC

Architectural rendering of check-in desk area.

Renovations to the front entrance of The Regional Cancer Center have been an opportunity to respond to patient comments about their RCC experience. While the fixtures and architecture of the entryway served the center well in its first 20+ years of operation, the growth of the center and needs of our patients suggested an update in the flow of traffic and layout of the area. Temperature control – heat, cold and wind – challenged visitors gathering at the check in desk. Congestion of visitors and a lack of patient privacy have also been concerns. Experiences, thoughts and suggestions from patients contributed to plans for the recent renovation that is nearly complete.

The renovated area has been designed to be welcoming, comfortable and especially respectful of patient privacy. It is a welcome addition to our patient centered approach to cancer care and a demonstration of our desire to be responsive to patient needs and concerns. We look forward to greeting you in this new way in new surroundings to better serve you.

Local artist, Ed Grout

Local artist, Ed Grout, has been commissioned to design and build a sculpture with a spirit of comfort and welcome for the new front entryway of the center.

Unique to RCC, the sculpture will be made of borosilicate glass tubing, borosilicate rods, and colored glass that create excellent optic flow of light. Using techniques of flame working, kiln forming and chemical bonding a 6’ x 5’ sculpture is being created.

The artist’s professional experience includes over 35 years experience working in the fine arts. He is skilled in all 3-D sculpture studio settings, including extensive practice in all glass working techniques. Ed has been owner – operator of an art and glass studio since 1985. His accomplishments include numerous public and private glass art commissions and original works. In addition to his own work in fine art, Ed has over 30 years experience developing and teaching art and glass art programs. He has numerous teaching artist residencies, public works and private collection commissions, and exhibitions to his credit.

Installation of this sculpture will add a special element to the new entryway. Our intention is to welcome visitors in an inviting and hopeful atmosphere.
