Measures of Quality in Radiation Care
Based on national recommendations (standards set by the American College of Radiology, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), in addition to state regulations) The Regional Cancer Center has gone above and beyond requirements and adopted additional quality assurance standards, to further excel in patient care.
In addition, significant upgrades to radiation care at the center have been instituted in the last year. State-of-the-art radiation care is demonstrated by:
- Initiation of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - delivering more dose to tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissue, thus minimizing side effects. Just one year ago only 157 clinics nationwide were capable of delivering this technology according to Oncology Roundtable, the Advisory Board Company.
- Two new state of the art linear accelerators (radiation treatment machines) were installed within the last year, allowing us to deliver the most technologically advanced treatments possible.
- In January 2003 a new helical CT scanner and treatment planning computer system were installed to initiate the most state-of-the-art treatment planning possible, called virtual simulation. This allows the treatment team to plan customized treatments, without inconveniencing the patient, achieving improved outcomes.
- The advanced capability of fusing MRI, PET, and CT images for treatment planning - thus bringing to the planning process the strengths of all three of these imaging capabilities. This gives the physician more information for diagnosis and treatment planning than ever before.
The quality of care at The Regional Cancer Center has been well documented. We are committed to continuous improvement in our mission to deliver excellent care to our patients and support to their families and significant others.
