About
Mammography
Why Mammography?
Breast cancer is a disease affecting many individuals today, including
women of all ages. While not 100% accurate for diagnosis, mammography
is presently the best mechanism in existence for screening purposes. It
is universally accepted that the earlier a breast cancer is diagnosed,
the better chance a woman has for cure.
What
is Mammography?
In this procedure, the breast is examined through the use of lowdose x-ray.
Pictures of both breasts are taken from two different angles, using a
machine that compresses the breast tissue for the best possible image.
This procedure can be uncomfortable but is painless. Once the technologist
reviews your films, you are free to leave. With in a short time, a Radiologist
(a physician trained with the expertise to interpret the x-rays) will
review your films and report back to your physician.
What
else should I know?
In preparing for your test, do not use deodorant, powder, perfumes or
creams in the underarm area or on the surface of the breasts. In choosing
your clothes for the day you may find it easier for you to wear a top,
separate from your other clothing to make it easier for you to change
into a hospital gown for the test. Lastly, you will need a prescription
from your physician for this test so that any insurance coverage can be
utilized. Insurance companies differ from one another for coverage, so
be sure to check with your own company for any specifics.

I need to be a patient at The Regional Cancer Center to use this service?
