Capabilities of the Trilogy Radiation Therapy System are extraordinary including the leading edge treatment advances of Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Gaited Respiration and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Learn more about Trilogy Radiation Therapy
Using the Trilogy System to its full potential in treatment applications is complex. For example, Trilogy comes equipped with motion management capabilities yet today just 12% of centers who own such equipment have developed the infrastructure in their cancer centers needed to use it. An experienced team of clinicians is required to take this technology to its highest potential and that's just what we have at The Regional Cancer Center. We are recognized nationally as a front runner in motion management for radiation therapy
About The Regional Cancer Center
The Regional Cancer Center
was one of the first free-standing community cancer care centers in the
country. Today, it is also among the largest of such facilities, providing over 200,000 services per year at multiple locations serving three states. Upon its opening, the Center received national attention for its collaborative approach to providing cancer care. Merging the resources
of Hamot Health Foundation and Saint
Vincent Health System with the expertise of a private physician group
made an unprecedented range of diagnostic and treatment capabilities available
locally. The Center continues to serve as a model throughout the country
for cancer care facilities.
The physicians of The Regional
Cancer Center were among the first in the nation to bring major treatment
specialties -- medical oncology, radiation oncology and hematology --
together in a single location. In doing so, they pioneered a cooperative
approach to treatment that is only now becoming widely emulated. The achievements
of the physician group in advancing cancer care have been recognized locally,
regionally and nationally.
Through the Erie Center and
its community-based satellite facilities, The Regional Cancer Center delivers
care to thousands of residents in an area encompassing eleven counties
in three states. As a result of pooled resources, the expertise of a leading
group of cancer care physicians and an extensive network of treatment
facilities, patients throughout the region have had access to advanced
technologies and treatment methods, at times before many other parts of
the country.
National Showsite
The Regional Cancer Center (RCC) has been named a “National Showsite” for GE Healthcare, a designation reserved for state-of-the-art facilities selected for procedural and technological excellence. The Regional Cancer Center is GE Healthcare’s first oncology Showsite. GE Healthcare has 66 Showsites nationally in other medical service lines.
GE Healthcare selected the RCC because of the advanced technology it offers in a community cancer care setting. Pooling the resources of partner hospitals, Hamot Medical Center and Saint Vincent Health Center, has enabled procurement of advanced cancer care technology well in advance of most cancer centers, including many academic programs.
As a Showsite, RCC hosts cancer care professionals from across the country to showcase its use of oncology products and services in the clinical setting. The goal of the cooperative program is to promote and transfer a greater understanding of quality healthcare options and the benefits of healthcare research by showcasing the use of products and services in an actual clinical setting.
Showsite visits will be transparent to patients being treated at the Center. Much of what is being showcased pertains to the intricate behind-the-scenes planning of radiation therapy involving high-end technology and highly trained professional team that includes medical physicists, dosimetrists and of course our board certified radiation oncologists.
“Showsite designation is exciting for us for two reasons,” explains Conrad Stachelek, PhD, MD, Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at RCC. “This designation brings global visibility to Erie and The Regional Cancer Center for the technologically advanced work we are doing. In addition, this closer partnership with GE puts us in a leadership position in terms of access to new and upcoming cancer care technology which will help to keep us providing leading edge care to our patients.”
So what does this mean to patients?
- Patients know from a third party (GE) that the equipment and staff at the RCC are among the best available anywhere.
- Others are coming here to see how we use the equipment, not just that we own it -- that's an important distinction for patients when comparing cancer care providers. Just like any advanced technology, buying it is the easy part. Making it work to its fullest advantage is painstaking and complex. We're being recognized for application of it and asked to train others.
- Motion management is the new frontier in cancer care. Anyone can imagine that as their body does what it does -- breathe, digest, etc. -- there is motion and variation day to day. Accounting for that motion is what this Showsite distinction is all about. We're managing motion during radiation therapy at RCC in a way that is gaining us national attention.
- The Showsite agreement includes advanced training for our staff ongoing.
- Closer working relationships with healthcare innovators via Showsite-related meetings and activities creates the platform for information and access that will keep RCC on the leading edge ongoing. Breaking research information and opportunity for participation in new research will be available to RCC at times in advance of academic centers.
