About
Support Services
The diagnosis of cancer or
other serious illness is often an emotionally and physically challenging
time, a time of many different feelings, thoughts and needs. It is also
a time when one's personal support resources are strained. This, too,
can bring conflict and the need for additional support as the patient
and family deal with the illness.
The staff of The Regional Cancer
Center's Support Services Department is aware of these concerns and seeks
to provide comprehensive care which addresses the individual's medical,
emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.
Pastoral
Support-Chaplain
The Regional Cancer Center's
chaplain has training and experience in the areas of emotional, psychological
and spiritual support of families and individuals. The chaplain is available
to provide, on a part-time basis, counseling and support in dealing with
any feelings or confusion that may surface. The Center's pastoral support
staff will assist the patient and family in mobilizing those emotional,
physical and spiritual resources which will help them deal with their
particular situation.
Social
Worker
Sometimes cancer and blood
disorders require the patient and family to change or adjust lifestyles.
Perhaps the need is to talk and explore the various concerns that arise
at the time of illness. The social worker is available to
assist with a variety of nonmedical problems and concerns. Examples include
providing information on support groups; coordinating transportation to
and from the Center; referral to agencies such as the American Cancer
Society and home health agencies; or even temporary housing. The social worker
can also provide information related to your diagnosis through the Center's
resource library.
Financial
Counselor
Because insurance plans differ
from person to person, a considerable amount of confusion can result regarding
the reimbursement of primary, secondary and supplemental coverage. In
order to further assist patients, a financial counselor is available to
help with questions and concerns.
The financial counselor will
verify coverage and discuss how insurance and/or other resources will
apply to services incurred. Should a balance on the account be anticipated,
special payment plans can be arranged to accommodate the patient, the
family and the Center.
Dietitian
Nutrition is an important
aspect of the treatment plan. Maintaining good nutrition is especially
important during cancer therapy. A proper diet can minimize weight loss
and help one feel stronger. Good nutrition also assists the patient in
obtaining the full benefit of therapy.
The Center's registered dietitian
is available to any patient and/or family member with diet related concerns.
Guidance in planning menus and diets, preparing meals, and sustaining
nutritional requirements are some of the services offered.
